Northwest Outdoor Activity Vehicle of the Year

By Phil Shuyler

Every year, a group of Northwest journalists vote for what they believe is the best outdoor
activity vehicle for the region. We tested 27 different SUVs, crossovers, trucks and wagons over
2 days with a mix of on-road and off-road driving environments. Here are this year’s winners by
category.

Best Compact : 2017 Jeep Compass Trailhawk
Best Premium Compact : 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack
Best for Families : 2017 Subaru Forester 2.5i
Best Premium : 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk
Best Extreme Capability : 2017 Land Rover Discovery HSE
Best Pickup : 2017 Ford Raptor
Best Overall : 2017 Land Rover Discovery HSE

Some noteworthy runner ups include the Volvo V90 Cross Country wagon, which was
surprisingly capable off-road, at least for a wagon. On-road handling and interior styling were
also above average.

The new Mitsubishi Outlander was also a surprise as it was the least expensive vehicle tested,
and definitely the best performer for the money. The most recent Outlander’s interior is much
improved over the past generation. And lastly, the Mazda CX-5, which has been a favorite of
ours for years, rated extremely high and was our pick as the Best Compact vehicle.

Congratulations to all of this year’s winners!
