ROAD TEST: 2009 KIA Borrego - Great Expectations

Named for the Anza-Borrego Desert region of the Mohave Desert - an arid, rocky and inhospitable place - the new Kia Borrego bears little in common with the desert badlands. Instead, it's full of creature comforts and feels more like a luxury 'ute. If you have high expectations of an SUV, but demand low purchase and operating costs, give this one try.

But just to be sure, we tested the Kia Borrego deep in the Mohave Desert both on and off-pavement, and its equally at home in the city as in the remote back country. Now in its second production year, its a well-sorted package, having earned a number of prestigious awards.

Far roomier on the inside than it looks, it lacks the heft and awkward feel of other like-sized SUVs. It drives and looks far better than its modest price suggest, starting at just $26,245, and we averaged better than 24-mpg during our test.
