ROAD TEST - 2009 Ford F-150 - truly "Built Ford Tough"

When the 2009 Ford F-150 was chosen by Motor Trend® as their Truck of the Year™, I was in complete agreement. My connection with this F-150 is deep - having tested "P221" long before this generation was introduced. Having logged a few thousand test miles behind the wheel of every F-150 variant - Ford's venerable F-150 pickup to me is among the finest pickup trucks ever made.

For this test, we added over 500-miles to the clock - in city and highway driving, with some long stretches of Interstate between off-highway ventures. On the road, F-150 ride and comfort is a big improvement over even recent models. Interior is much quieter, with a lot of fine-tuning paid to details such as control placement. Off-highway, the chassis is solid and sure, and its here that F-150's huge torque and power are most appreciated.

For such a tough pickup, creature comforts inside the cab rival that of the most luxurious and expensive grand touring sedan. Our test model was fully-equipped, and we most appreciated the air-conditioned seats, GPS Nav and superlative premium Sony® sound system. But most remarkable are the seats - beyond the A/C - they are incredibly comfortable.

In the first years of P221, I hosted all of the In The Field With Ford driving segments for the TV show "Cabela's® Outfitter's Journal." Even then, the first models of the "new" F-150 proved superior in the rugged outdoors than competitors.

Rivals are Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge and Toyota Tundra full-size pickups. Ford F-150 prices start at $20,815 (base 2WD models) which gets up to 21-mpg. Our test model (loaded F-150 Lariat) starts at $32,130; Our "Flex-Fuel" Lariat got about 25-mpg on E-85 fuel.
